The downland is situated on a steep, south facing, slope overlooking the Vale of Pewsey, set within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a rich bio diversity which makes it an important Natural England Nature Reserve. This is rented to the farm under strict grazing controls as it has some of the rarest plants and insects in the Country.
Amongst these are the Marbled White, Chalk Hill Blue and Marsh Fritillary butterflies and amongst the Red Fescue grassland there is an abundance of fragrant orchids in May and June. During July Ox Eye Daisies and Round Headed Rampion are in flower. At the top of the Downs is Milk Hill the highest point in Wiltshire at 294 metres.
